So in the two last weeks I drove to and Maine, and back through Canada. And do you know what car I saw more than any other?

These freaking Hyundia Elantras.

Kinja'd!!!

Well I saw surprizing amount of all newer Korean cars. But the Elantra more than any other. I also saw way too many Old Pontiac Sunfires. Which it seems have different tailights than the US market cars. Which is odd.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s also worth mentioning that most of the Sunfires weren’t on the road, just sitting and rotting on some skezzy used car lot, or in front of a questionable looking. mechanic’s shop.

I believe the Elantra is the 3rd best selling car in Canadaland, behind the Corolla and the best selling Civic. Although the Caravan is actually the third best seller if you count minivans as passenger cars, which would make the Elantra the fourth best seller.

We like our compact cars.

My sister just bought a 99 Sunfire. The Sunturd should have stayed in that hicks back yard...

Those actually go by a different name in Canada. Up there it’s called the Ehlantra.

I think 75% of production of the facelift final run Sunfire was sold in the lower mainland of BC alone. They were everywhere there for a long time.

The Sunfire was 2-door only in the U.S. from 2003 on but the sedan remained in production and on sale in Canada until the J-Body platform’s ultimate demise in 2005.

So, the Sunfire sedans in Canada (at least from 2003 on) did have those tail lights pictured.

Google don’t lie. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a recent development though. It’s stats appears to just be for Feb of 2016, I guess that the most recent stat Google has.

Found a newer source. From April. Although you’ll notice Hyundia is actually in the top ten twice. With the Accent out selling the Golf, and Toyota Camry. Wow.

in the early 2000s and late 90s, Canada was obsessed with GM. I’m glad thats over because I hate sunfires and cavaliers.

Compact cars sell a lot in Canada because cars are more expensive here. When I go to New York I notice alot more mid-size and large sedans.

I personally think the GM compact has a bad image around it Canada, it’s seen in trashy areas and owned by lower class families streotypically in my eyes. Obviously there are tons of exceptions. The cruze is slowly going down this way (I see alot of monster energy drink fred durst types with modified Cruzes). But obviously thats just generalizing.

In 2006 My mom bought my Middle trim Civic for $30,000

In the US back then $30,000 couldve got you a fully loaded si.

Speaking as someone who lives in Canada (Toronto) I can confirm you are 100% correct on both Elantra and Sunfire points.

I gues that kind of explains it. And there’s no Patriotic element in play. I know plenty of people that would buy a Cruze over an Elantra if for no other reason than, the Chevy is “American made” .... Yeah sure it is...

Every time I hear mention of Toronto I can’t help but think of Scott Pilgrim VS the World.

I’ve driven every car in that class, and honestly the Elentra is better made vehicle, but nobody would believe it because Hyundai. Thankfully thats slowly dying out. My stepdad currently has a ‘14 Cruze with 40,000kms from his dealership, and it has problems that my 186,000KM Honda civic hasnt experienced ever. Maybe its a abuse from the old owner, but I suspect GM build quality.

Elantra is a great car, the only problem I have is that it’s extremely underpowered. Maybe the 2017 will fix that. For most people its fine though.

I do have a friend whos parents refuse to buy japanese.

CAD is usually about $1.20-1.30 to the USD, so you can’t just drop the number for direct comparison. Canadians generally make 150-200% of what someone in the US makes for the same job, too.

Will confirm, Sunfires are EVERYWHERE here! The two biggest guys I know (300+lbs), drive Sunfire sedans (it’s where seeing someone fill a car with themselves).
